Marie Devlieger holds an MA in English and Spanish Literature from Vrije Universiteit Brussel during which she specialised in 20th century Latin-American literature. In her MA dissertation she analysed the theme of death in the works of three prominent Mexican authors. She is currently a PhD candidate at the VUB. Her research project, ""Death also lives": A Semiology of Death in Contemporary Female Latin-American authors", focuses on the analysis of various representations of death in four novels by a new generation of successful female authors in Latin-American literature. Following the latest work of Hélène Cixous, a key figure in feminist studies, the project examines how these different representations challenge the patriarchal representation of death as violence and power in order to accentuate a more complex, nuanced interpretation that accentuates the relation with difference or alterity.
