The conference "Transatlantic Flows: The Circulation of Literature between the Americas and Europe" examines the forms and functions of transnational literary circulation and literary actors in transfer between Europe and the Americas. The contributions examine the mutability of literary recognition and social status from a diachronic and transnational perspective. There is a particular focus on writers' mobility - from literary tours to political exile - and how this determines their 'posture' and 'symbolic capital'. The main aim of the symposium is to bring together scholars from Comparative Literature, Translation Studies, Cultural Studies and other disciplines in a discussion on translation and literary hierarchies, the role of translation in canon dynamics, interference and dependency in literary systems, literary legitimacy and prestige through translation. A literary sociological perspective is taken with explicit attention to the transfer dynamics between European and South and North American literatures, respectively.
