Florian Deroo
Biography
I am a scholar of comparative literature with special expertise in travel writing, aesthetics, and the cultural history of the interwar period. My 2025 doctoral dissertation at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Ghent University explored the sensory experience of landscapes in 1930s travel writing in English, Dutch, and German. I am also the author of Barge Life: On Jean Vigo’s ‘L’Atalante’ (Punctum, 2025), a reconsideration of a 1934 classic of French cinema.
Before my postdoctoral fellowship at CLIC, I was a Fulbright Fellow at The New School for Social Research and a Visiting Doctoral Researcher at Oxford University. I am an associated member of the international research network ‘Traveling Bodies: Bodies and Corporeality in Travel Texts’. Outside academia, I regularly write for outlets such as De Standaard and am a former editor of the journal Rekto:verso.
