Jean Cocteau et l'intermédialité
Jean Cocteau was a pioneer in the field of intermediality. As early as the 1920s, he was practicing a 'new kind' of art. Artistic interferences arise from the blending of rarely reconciled media, such as theater and children's literature, ballet and photography, poetry and the detective genre, or film and the fairground arts. They give rise to entirely new kinds of intermedia combinations. The characteristics of this intermedial practice avant la lettre are analyzed in four major works: the show Les Mariés de la tour Eiffel, the ballet Le Train bleu, the poetry collection Opéra and the film Le Sang d'un poète.
