Sheila Sandapen
Biography
Sheila F.T. Sandapen is the author of several articles on how the factors of gender, wealth, familial obligations and ethnicity shape the identity of Caribbean and Indian women living in Britain today and why their stories make a valuable and essential contribution to Black British Literature. Her most recent publication is “Skin Deep: Visual Representations of White/British Identity and Black/Foreign Identity in Commercially Successful Popular Cinema.” Mapping Minds. Ed. Monika Raesch. Oxford, UK: The Inter-Disciplinary Press, 2010. 163-169. She has a forthcoming chapter for a book on visual literacy and mapping of identity also for the Inter-Disciplinary Press. Born in London to immigrant parents from the island nation of Mauritius, she now lives in the U.S.A where she teaches literature and composition at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa. She earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
