PREMISE
The writers listed below have been preliminarily selected for the AFROPEMOTIONS project. This selection may be updated over time. Each webpage provides brief biographical information and an overview of the authors’ publications, including the works analysed in this project.
The term “Afropean” (or “Afro-European”) was introduced in the early 1990s by David Byrne and Belgian-Congolese artist Marie Daulne, the lead singer of the group Zap Mama (Pitts 2019: 5). The concept has since been discussed further by several scholars, including Brancato (2009), Pitts (2019), Miano (2020), and Otele (2020). Not all writers examined in this project identify as “Afropean”. As part of AFROPEMOTIONS, this category will be contextualised and critically examined, taking into account each author’s positioning and sense of belonging.
For the purposes of this project, “Afropean” refers to women writers of African descent who were either born and raised in Europe or migrated to Europe during their lifetime and resided there for an extended period. For practical reasons, the selected writers are associated with the European country where they currently live or lived for a substantial time, and where the works analysed in this project are primarily set.
