MERLIT researcher Ceydanur Temurok is going to present her research at the symposium “Violence, Translation, and Testimonial Authority: Ethics and Transmediality in Life-Writing”, organised by the Centre for Literary and Intermedial Crossings (CLIC, VUB), in cooperation with CLIV (UGent/VUB) and CEREP (ULiege), on 17-18 September 2026. Her presentation titled “Translating Inherited Trauma and Violence in Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (2019) and Hafsa Zayyan’s We Are All Birds of Uganda (2021)”, examines how histories of war, colonialism, migration, and expulsion continue to shape postmigrant formation across generations. Bringing Vuong and Zayyan into conversation, she considers how inherited histories of violence are culturally translated across languages, memories, generations, and forms of belonging.
