MERLIT researcher Maxime Louise Honinx and MERLIT associated researcher Marjolein Goethals have published their co-authored article on Lucy Atkinson's Recollections of Tartar steppes and their inhabitants (1863) in the journal English Text Construction.
Other than considerations as a historical source, little has been written on Atkinson’s travelogue as a work of writing, which details her almost six-year-long journey from Saint Petersburg across Siberia up to the border with China and back. This article sets out to redress that imbalance by analysing the role of the epistolary form and the linguistic implications of travel in the construction of the memoir.
The authors extend their gratitude to Carmen Hesketh (National Library of Scotland/ Leabharlann Nàiseanta na h-Alba), Dr Anne McLaughlin (Trinity College Library, Cambridge) and Pippa Smith for their help in making possible the publication of several of Lucy Atkinson's original letters in English Text Construction.
